9 Reasons Why the Church cannot afford to be ignorant of Evil?

7/24/2023

"Lest Satan should get an advantage of us:
for we are not ignorant of his devices."
2 Corinthians 2:11

Being ignorant of evil can have significant consequences for individuals and society as a whole. Here are some reasons why it is important not to be ignorant of evil:
  1. Personal safety: Understanding the potential for evil and harmful behaviors can help individuals be more vigilant and cautious in their interactions with others. Recognizing warning signs and red flags can contribute to personal safety and well-being.
  2. Prevention of harm: Awareness of evil actions and their underlying causes can aid in identifying potential threats and intervening before harm is inflicted on others. This is particularly crucial in situations where vulnerable individuals or groups may be at risk.
  3. Building empathy and compassion: Understanding the origins and consequences of evil can help foster empathy and compassion for victims and survivors. It can also provide insights into the factors that lead individuals to perpetrate evil acts, encouraging efforts to address those root causes.
  4. Promoting ethical decision-making: Knowledge of the psychology of evil can serve as a reminder of the potential for harmful actions and encourage individuals to reflect on their own moral choices. This reflection may lead to more ethical decision-making and a greater sense of responsibility for one's actions.
  5. Social awareness and responsibility: Recognizing evil behaviors in society prompts a collective responsibility to address and combat them. It can motivate individuals and communities to work together to create a safer and more just environment.
  6. Preventing history from repeating: By understanding the atrocities and evils of the past, we can learn from historical mistakes and work to prevent similar events from occurring in the future. Awareness of historical atrocities is essential for building a more tolerant and inclusive society.
  7. Resisting manipulation and propaganda: Understanding how evil can be propagated through misinformation and manipulation helps individuals become more discerning consumers of information and less susceptible to manipulation.
  8. Encouraging justice and accountability: Awareness of evil acts encourages the pursuit of justice and accountability for those who perpetrate harm. It supports the establishment of legal systems and mechanisms to address and prevent evil actions.
  9. Psychological well-being: Being informed about the existence and manifestations of evil can help individuals make sense of traumatic or challenging experiences and promote psychological healing and resilience.
It is important to note that while it is essential not to be ignorant of evil, it is equally important to avoid becoming consumed by negativity or falling into despair; This is where Jesus is proven "Good News". Knowledge about evil should be used constructively to promote positive change, understanding, empathy and a tool to help bring people to Jesus. Education, open dialogue, and a commitment to ethical principles is what Christianity is all about. Addressing and mitigating the impact of evil in the world is the great commission! Jesus gave to us when he said:
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,
All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
(Matthew 28:18-20)

What is the Psychology of Evil?

7/23/2023

The psychology of evil is a field of study that examines the underlying factors and processes that contribute to individuals engaging in harmful, malicious, or destructive behaviors. It seeks to understand why some people commit acts that cause harm to others and how various psychological, social, and situational factors may influence these behaviors.

Several key concepts and theories are often explored within the psychology of evil:
  1. Situational influences: Some researchers argue that situational factors, such as authority figures, peer pressure, or group dynamics, can have a significant impact on a person's behavior. The famous Milgram experiment and Stanford prison experiment are examples of studies that demonstrate how ordinary individuals can engage in harmful actions when placed in specific situations.
  2. Obedience to authority: People may be more likely to commit harmful acts when instructed to do so by someone perceived as an authority figure. This phenomenon is known as the "obedience to authority" or the "Milgram effect."
  3. Deindividuation: In certain circumstances, individuals may lose their sense of individual identity and personal responsibility, leading them to engage in actions they might not consider otherwise. This phenomenon is called "deindividuation" and is often associated with mob behavior or anonymity in large groups.
  4. Moral disengagement: Some individuals can psychologically distance themselves from their harmful actions by justifying or rationalizing their behavior. They may use cognitive mechanisms like displacement of responsibility, diffusion of responsibility, or minimizing the consequences of their actions.
  5. Cognitive biases: Certain cognitive biases, such as in-group favoritism or out-group derogation, can lead individuals to dehumanize or demonize others, making it easier to harm or mistreat them.
  6. Socialization and upbringing: Early life experiences, parenting styles, and social influences play a role in shaping an individual's beliefs, values, and attitudes. People who have been exposed to violence, abuse, or aggressive role models may be more prone to engaging in harmful behaviors.
  7. Personality traits: Some research suggests that certain personality traits, such as psychopathy, sadism, or narcissism, may be associated with a higher likelihood of engaging in evil or malicious actions. However, it is essential to note that personality traits alone cannot fully explain complex behaviors like evil.
The psychology of evil is a multifaceted and challenging field of study; no single factor can fully account for all instances of harmful behavior. The term "evil" is a morally and culturally loaded concept, and the understanding of what constitutes evil may vary across different societies and belief systems. As believers in Christ we are not to be ignorant of "evil schemes" so we can shine light on the causes and prevention of evil to a lost, blind and hurting world. Jesus is the good news and the Savior we all need.

How do we “Rest” from "Work"?

7 Activities Christians can enjoy when they rest from work.

In the Bible, "work" is often described as labor or productive activity that involves physical or mental effort. It is viewed as a meaningful and essential part of human existence, with various passages emphasizing the value of diligence, responsibility, and the use of one's talents and skills for the greater good. The concept of work is mentioned throughout different books in the Bible, such as in Genesis, where it is associated with the act of creation, and in the New Testament, where the Apostle Paul speaks about working diligently and honestly. The Bible encourages people to approach their work with integrity and dedication, recognizing it as a way to honor God and be His hands and feet here on earth.

Biblical “rest” is a period of rejuvenation, refreshment, and cessation from work. Knowing how to rest is important for our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Biblical “rest” is interwoven into the fabric of life. The Sabbath Day, is described in the Old Testament (Exodus 20:8-11), as a time to cease regular work and focus on spiritual reflection and worship; The Sabbatical Year (Exodus 23:10-11) emphasizes the importance of allowing the land to rest and recover its fertility; The Jubilee Year (Leviticus 25:8-13) symbolizes by the liberation of slaves and the return of land to its original owners; and perpetually ordained feasts and festivals, like the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) is a joyful occasion marked by camping outdoors and giving people a break from their usual routines (Leviticus 23:39-43). These examples highlight the importance of establishing a routine for rest, reflection, worship, and rejuvenation.

Here are seven activities Christians can enjoy when they rest from work:
  1. Nature Walks: Explore local parks, nature trails, or nearby natural areas. Connecting with God through nature can be a great way to relax, de-stress, and honor the work and majesty of the Creator’s hands.
  2. DIY Spa Day: Create a spa-like experience at home with your family and friends, give yourself permission to enjoy a DIY facial mask, relaxing bath, or foot soak. Bless God for commanding us to take a break from the stresses of life and reflect on how Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. You can use simple ingredients like oatmeal, honey, or essential oils for the pampering session.
  3. Reading: Read your favorite stories from the bible, borrow books from the library or read free e-books online. Reading is an excellent way to escape into different worlds, expand your creativity, gain knowledge, and unwind. Then bless God, knowing that both creativity and wisdom come from God for us to enjoy and benefit.
  4. Prayer and Worship: Practice meditation at home using soaking prayer resources online or sing to the Lord all your favorite worship songs. The joy of the Lord is your strength and these activities promote mindfulness, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being.
  5. Picnics: Pack a simple picnic with homemade sandwiches and snacks, and head to a local park or scenic spot for a budget-friendly outdoor meal with friends or family. Take time to bless God for his provision of beauty, food and fellowship.
  6. Stargazing: Look up local astronomy events or just lay out a blanket in your backyard to observe the night sky. Stargazing can be a peaceful and awe-inspiring experience knowing that God created the heavens and all that is in them.
  7. Community Events: Check out free or low-cost events in your community, such as concerts, art exhibitions, or cultural festivals. Many towns and cities offer a range of affordable activities that you can enjoy, meet new people and bless God for all the good things He is doing in people’s lives.
In the New Testament, Jesus invites people to find rest in Him (Matthew 11:28-30). He offers solace to those who are weary and burdened, promising rest for their souls through faith and trust in Him. Resting from work is crucial for our overall well-being and productivity. Physically and mentally, taking time to rest allows our bodies and minds to recover, reducing stress and fatigue. It enhances our ability to focus, be creative, and solve problems effectively.

Resting fosters better relationships with loved ones, provides opportunities for spiritual and emotional renewal, and promotes a healthy work-life balance. By avoiding burnout and cultivating “rest”, we can lead more fulfilling and productive lives, both personally and professionally, while maintaining a sense of happiness and satisfaction in the Lord. Establishing a routine for rest supports our physical health, mental clarity, and emotional resilience, while also fueling our productivity, creativity, and relationships. Embracing moments of rest allows us to bring our best selves to the world around us and bring glory to God in our daily life.

    Understanding Humanity & Christianity

There is logic behind all human behavior. Christianity was never intended to be above rational thought; and what is good & evil, right or wrong, is best understood by what we have individually seen, heard and experienced. So how can we discern the difference? What is the logic behind some of the most atrocious acts of violence or crimes against humanity? What logic or "good" could there be to evils like murder and war? How real is spirituality and what role does it play in human behavior? Follow us here as our Visionary attempts to explain and expand awareness to the powerful and painful complex realities of the human experience and biblical controversies.
